Statement of Claim
Claimant says:
"I noticed a leak coming from the base of my Culligan Water System. I am not sure the age of the unit, it was in the home when we purchased it, approximately 3.5 years ago. the home was built in 2001, so the unit was younger than that. On a Saturday morning, I called the service number on the unit, and was connected to the tech that was "on call". He informed me of a $250.00 charge before he comes out, because it was Saturday and outside business hours. He told me that if I could wait till Monday, this would avoid the charge. I called the office on Monday and set up a time for a tech to come and look at the leak. the tech arrived, took a 10 second glance at the unit, verified it was leaking, and proceeded to start the sales pitch for a new unit. he started with a "water test" to show me all the the impurities in my water, and how their $3800.00 system would solve. I asked about repairing the system i had, and he told me that, parts were no longer available and, they would have to repair the tank i had, and that would take weeks to complete. I didn't like either option and decided i would get a second opinion. This entire service call, which was much more like a sales call, than a service call, lasted no longer than 20-30 minutes.
I called another company for a second opinion. The following day, the other company came by to look at the system. The salesperson was very polite, and very knowledgeable. He also informed me that he previously worked at Culligan and left there due to the way they handled there business. he also stated that they have service techs doing water tests and they are not properly trained to do so. He proceeded to do a water test, and completly discredited the tests done by the Culligan rep, and explained that the system they were trying to sell, was way overkill for the issues in my house. He proposed a much simpler system for less than half the cost of the Culligan system. I agreed and set up a time for install. I never received a follow up call, or letter from Culligan water. Over 2 months later I received a bill for a service call at $135.00 from Culligan. I immediately called them and asked what it was for. They said for the service call. I explained, no service was performed, only a sales pitch. They said too bad, you owe this money. I have refused to pay, called the corporate headquarters, and have received a new bill every month since, adding an additional $5.00 dollars each time as a late fee.
I am a small business owner myself,, and if I attempted to charge $135.00 for every estimate I did, and didn't get the job, I would quickly go out out of business, and more importantly, wouldn't be able to look at myself in the mirror. Culligan water feels they are above "ethical practices" due to the number of years in business.
I feel this is "price gauging" and the the unethical people at Culligan should be exposed for who and what they are. Scammers!"
