Richard F. says: I took my Moms truck in for inspection in 2015. They said it needed a left rear caliper and brake pads.
Recently mom passed away and we brought the truck home so we could sell it.
Since I am a retired mechanic I decided to go over the truck to make sure all was good and to do needed repairs. I found a bad brake line and when bleeding the brakes the bleeder valve on the right rear was rusted so I drcided to replace the caliper. When I pulled the caliper off I found that the brake pads were worn completely down. I went to the parts store and purchased new pads and a new caliper for the right rear.
When pulling the left side caliper I found virtually new pads. I replaced both left and right rear pads and the caliper on the right rear
After I finished the job I inspected the pads and discovered that they were two different pads. I did this by comparing the manufacture sizes and markings on the pads.
It became very clear that the right side brake pads were not replaced during the repair.
I called Mr Clemons just to let him know what his mechanic had done. Mr Clemons immediately got defensive at which time I told him I was not calling to argue with him and that I was calling as a courtesy to let him know. H did state that since the repair was done in 2015 the truck probably had thousands of miles put on it since the repair. What Mr Clemons didn’t know was that there had been very few miles put on that truck since 2015.
There was also no mechanical problems with the right rear caliper other than the bleeder being broken off.
Yes if the caliper would have been defective that may have been why the pads were worn down on that side. This was not the case and the fact that they were two different types of pads confirms that they were not changed.
Let’s face it, most mechanic get paid based on the amount of work they get done compared to the industry standard of allowed time vs actual. If a mechanic can cut a corner to save time they make more money because they can sooner move on to the next job and so on.
I have the old pads taken off the truck and can show anyone else who might doubt my claim.
To conclude: I have no reason to lie to Mr Clemons about this. I only called to inform him of the problem. I ask for no refund nor did I at any time get upset with Mr Clemons. I told him what I found and that would have been the end of it if he would have been in the least a little concerned of apologetic. There was none of that. He only tried to immediately get defensive and make claims the it was due to mileage and a bad caliper.
His response then led me to write this rating with my findings.
