Sherry G. says:
The people in the surgical waiting room was very rude to our family. This was our first time at UAB . My husband was have a very critical surgery. As l came out from where they were taking him down to surgery l was attacked by this rude obnoxious little man pointing his finger in my face saying are you the spouse or significant other of the patient. I said yes. He said only two members of the family can be in the waiting room. I said we were here yesterday for pre- op no one said anything to us about this. There was our two kids and their spouses standing there. My daughter in tears. You have ten minutes to leave the floor. Just then my husband's relatives from Mississippi come up and ask what is going on . I try to explain. She said listen man l called yesterday and they told me there was no certain number of people that could be in the waiting room. He smartly said you must have called the wrong hospital. They have driven three hours to come for the surgery. There was another family in the waiting room with 10 people sitting there. I asked why were they all getting to stay. He said it was none of my concern. I have never been treated so disrespectful in all my life. We had to go down to the second floor waiting room to wait to hear from my husband's surgery. It got pushed back two hours. They didn't call us for hours and let us know anything. When he finally got to recovery they said it would be after midnight before we would get a room. The next morning we kept wondering why he never got breakfast when l asked they said we had to order our own food for him. We have been in a lot of hospitals but never have l ever had to order the food. What do the people get paid to do there? The IV machine beeped for thirty minutes after l called no one never came. I finally took the line apart and fixed the link in the line and restarted it. The machine did this many times while we were there l
Just fixed it myself because l new they would never come. They never offered me any blankets, cover or a pillow. No towels or bath cloths. It was a nightmare. I had to get my husband up to go to the bathroom by myself. He had fifteen staples in one groan and ten in the other. He couldn't walk by himself. They just left you to do for yourself. The only thing good l have to say about the place was Dr.Pearce. He is a wonderful dr and did a fantastic job . He was very hands on and very personable. I want be back to your hospital but l hope he goes somewhere else in cause we need to use him again. We are looking into a discrimination suit against your employer in the waiting room. One of our family members recorded the conversation and from
what we have been told he was clearly way out of line. You don't treat people who are in such a life threatening situation like they are inhuman. The man doesn't need to be working around people when he has no impiety for people. I have nightmares about him. I pray for him. This is a nightmare l will never forget but l will that l could. I think your hospital is more about teaching students that helping people and saving life's. Sherry Goodin
