About
Brian Ward
I have been working as a advocate within my union for the last 10 years or so. I am wanting to move into other roles in Conflict Resolution, hopefully to eventually quit my full-time job (flying corporate jets). I want to explore various areas of ADR, particularly the new frontier of ODR. At some point, I may go back and get a JD, but for now, I'm happy working as a neutral or conflict coach.
Views on the practice of law
There is an important role for law and lawyers, however, it is overused and often does not function in a way that actually helps people resolve their disputes. It gives answers - centered in rights - but does a poor job of addressing the underlying interests and needs of the parties. One example of ADR that I think begins to work toward effective reforms is Restorative Justice. We need long-term solutions, not just answers.
Reason to be here
I have already completed all my classwork for the Master's Degree. I have also spent 10+ years working in and with conflict. I think my experience and schooling both situate me well for this internship.
